Volgograd, formerly known as Stalingrad, is located on the west bank of the Volga River and was the scene of one of the most important and bloodiest battles of WWII, the Battle of Stalingrad, from August 21, 1942 to February 2, 1943. Don't miss the Panorama museum, located alongside the Volga river, it contains artifacts from World War II, including a panoramic painting of the battlefield viewed from the monument "Mamayev Kurgan", and a rifle of the famous sniper Vasily Zaytsev.
