The Grand Place or Grote Markt is the central market square of Brussels, and it is surrounded by the Town Hall, guild houses and the Breadhouse. The town hall dates from 1402, and has a gothic tower designed by architect Jan van Ruysbroeck, with a statue of St. Michael, the patron of Brussels at the top. The original Breadhouse was from the 13th century, and in 1873 it was restored with its present neo gothic style.
