Cartago

The town of Cartago was founded by the Spanish in 1563, and it was an important site until the 19th century, when earthquakes destroyed most of the old buildings. Today, the little city is a provincial capital, but parts of it preserve some of the colonial atmosphere.  Volcan Irazu and the Ruins of Ujarras also lie nearby.
